KATHMANDU, May 30: President Ramchandra Paudel has stated that recognizing women’s capability, creativity, and leadership as key pillars of nation-building is essential for achieving national prosperity and sustainable development.
Extending his best wishes to Nepali women at home and abroad on the occasion of the 8th National Women’s Rights Day, being observed today under the slogan “Campaign for Respect for Women’s Rights, Self-Reliance, and Prosperity,” President Paudel said:
“Building a dignified and safe society by eliminating all forms of discrimination, violence, and inequality against women is our shared responsibility. There is a need to strengthen cooperation between the state and civil society to promote gender equality by ensuring meaningful participation of women in homes, communities, workplaces, and decision-making processes.”
The President also expressed gratitude to all those who have contributed to ensuring women’s rights.
Sustainable Tourism Challenges
National Women’s Rights Day is observed annually on Jestha 16 (May/June) to commemorate the day in 2006 when the then-reinstated House of Representatives passed four important special resolutions related to women’s rights. President Paudel expressed confidence that the day would further strengthen recognition and respect for past national and international efforts to ensure women’s rights and gender equality.
He noted that government policies and programs are being implemented to integrate women’s labor, skills, creativity, and capabilities into the mainstream development process, ensure equal access to resources and opportunities, and increase women’s participation in decision-making. He added that Nepali women have achieved remarkable success in education, science, technology, politics, administration, arts, and entrepreneurship.
He further stated: “May this day inspire everyone to build a civilized society based on gender equality by ensuring the safety, dignity, and rights of Nepali women through positive changes in social attitudes, traditions, customs, and practices.”
Need to Create an Environment for Women’s Participation: VP Yadav
Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav has emphasized the need to create an environment that encourages women to be aware of their rights and actively participate in leadership, education, entrepreneurship, and social contributions.
On the occasion of the 8th National Women’s Rights Day 2083 (2026), he extended heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for happiness, peace, prosperity, and continued progress to Nepali women living in Nepal and abroad.
Vice President Yadav stated that the day should also be viewed as an opportunity to raise a collective voice against all forms of violence, discrimination, and inequality against women. He noted that the day has played an important role in implementing constitutional provisions related to gender equality and spreading social awareness.
VP Yadav said, “Equal development of society is impossible without guaranteeing women’s rights. Cooperation among the government, civil society, and all sectors is indispensable to ensure women’s dignified presence in education, health, skill development, economic independence, political participation, legal reform, and leadership.”
He pointed out that constitutional provisions such as equal property rights, mandatory representation of women at the local level, participation of at least three women from each province in the National Assembly, and the guarantee of one-third representation of women in the House of Representatives through the proportional representation system have institutionalized women’s rights.
The Vice President said that National Women’s Rights Day is observed every year on May 30 to honor historical achievements in women’s rights. These achievements include citizenship provisions through either parent, constitutional guarantees of at least one-third women’s participation in all state structures, repeal of discriminatory laws, and commitments to end violence against women.
He expressed confidence that the day would further strengthen efforts toward gender equality, women’s empowerment, justice, and an inclusive society.
He added, “National Women’s Rights Day inspires us to accept that gender equality and women’s empowerment are essential conditions for social prosperity and national progress. May this day encourage everyone to unite in achieving the goals of justice, equality, inclusion, and empowerment.”
