Dublin, Oct 26: Left-leaning independent candidate Catherine Connolly has been elected as Ireland’s next president with 63 percent of the vote, defeating her centre-right challenger, Heather Humphreys, according to Al Jazeera.
The 68-year-old was officially declared the winner after counting concluded across all 43 constituencies on Saturday evening, said Al Jazeera. In her victory address at Dublin Castle, Connolly pledged to be “a president who listens and speaks when necessary,” expressing hope for “a republic that values everyone,” reported Al Jazeera. Humphreys, a member of the Fine Gael party, conceded defeat before the final tally was released, added Al Jazeera.

Connolly, a former barrister and independent lawmaker since 2016, maintained a strong lead in opinion polls throughout the campaign, reported Al Jazeera. Her outspoken criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza and support for Palestinian rights earned her the backing of left-wing groups such as Sinn Fein, the Labour Party, and the Social Democrats, said Al Jazeera. Her pro-Palestine stance and focus on social justice issues resonated strongly with younger voters, according to Al Jazeera.
Deputy Prime Minister and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris congratulated Connolly, wishing her “every success” and saying that “her success will be Ireland’s success,” posted on X, reported Al Jazeera.
Connolly and Humphreys became the only two contenders after Fianna Fail candidate Jim Gavin, supported by Prime Minister Micheal Martin, withdrew three weeks before election day due to a past financial controversy, said Al Jazeera.
Although Ireland’s president holds a largely ceremonial position and has no role in shaping government policy, the office remains important for representing the nation abroad and upholding constitutional duties, reported Al Jazeera.
Connolly will replace Michael D. Higgins, who has served since 2011 and reached the two-term limit. She will become Ireland’s 10th president and the third woman to hold the office, according to Al Jazeera.
