KATHMANDU, Nov 29: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Mahesh Acharya has urged party president Sher Bahadur Deuba to show “generosity and selflessness” to help steer the party out of its current crisis.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Acharya said only Deuba has the authority and credibility to guide the party toward a “crisis resolution” amid growing internal disputes over the timing of the general convention. He suggested that Deuba temporarily step back from active power politics and provide clear direction to ensure the convention is held before the upcoming elections.
“I believe that to free the Congress from its current critical situation, it is essential for you to pause from power politics and pave the way for a general convention before the elections,” he wrote, adding that no other leader currently matches Deuba’s stature within the party.

“Time is calling for your sacrifice and generosity to rescue the party,” he added.
Acharya noted that Deuba’s term as president will expire in a few weeks and that party regulations may not allow him to seek another term. He also questioned whether Deuba intends to return as prime minister and, if so, with whose support.
He cautioned Deuba against manoeuvres aimed solely at installing a successor, saying such strategies would not be accepted by the nation, the party or history. “With a generous mindset, there are no personal ambitions—only the desire for national progress, party unity, and the preservation of the Congress’s proud legacy and the dedication of millions of its members,” Acharya wrote.
Recalling the tenure of former party president Subarna Shamsher, he noted how past leaders opened the door for new leadership through special conventions. Acharya urged Deuba to take decisive steps to address generational issues and propose reforms in leadership, working style and broad policy direction to meet the aspirations of both the party and the nation.
