KATHMANDU, Jan 30: The Nepali Embassy in the United States has urged Nepali nationals residing in the country to strictly comply with US laws and avoid any unlawful activities, warning that misuse of government-provided benefits could directly affect their visa or immigration status.
Issuing a public notice on Thursday, the embassy called on Nepalis living in the US for study, travel, employment, business, or family visits to refrain from staying illegally or providing false or misleading information to access benefits meant exclusively for American citizens.

According to the embassy, US authorities have informed that if foreign nationals are found to be dependent on welfare facilities such as subsidized healthcare, housing assistance, family support, or educational aid reserved for US citizens, their visa or green card status could be directly impacted and even revoked.
The embassy also recalled that in 2024, Nepali citizens were found to be among the top groups of foreign nationals availing such subsidized services. Citing this, the US government had earlier issued a public notice announcing the temporary suspension of immigrant visas for Nepali applicants.
Reiterating its appeal, the embassy urged Nepalis residing in the US for various purposes not to rely on or misuse welfare services through illegal means or by submitting incorrect information. It emphasized that such actions could have serious legal and immigration consequences.
Additionally, the embassy cautioned against the misuse of B-1 (business) and B-2 (tourist) visas, noting that the US government has been tightening visa regulations across various categories in recent days.
