PANCHKHAL, June 1: The Nepali Army celebrated International United Nations Peacekeepers’ Day with a special ceremony held at the Birendra Peace Operations Training Centre in Panchkhal, honouring the families of two soldiers who lost their lives during peacekeeping missions and recognising five personnel for their outstanding service in UN operations.
The day is observed every year on May 29 to honour the contribution of peacekeepers who have served and are currently serving in conflict-affected regions around the world under UN peacekeeping missions.

During the programme, Chief of Army Staff General Ashok Raj Sigdel honoured the families of two soldiers who attained martyrdom during peacekeeping missions and presented appreciation letters to five soldiers recognized for their outstanding performance in peace operations.
The ceremony was attended by the Secretary of Defence, chiefs and officials of the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal and the National Investigation Department, local representatives, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chief District Officer of Kavrepalanchok, military attachés from friendly nations, journalists, as well as senior officers, personnel, and other ranks of the Nepali Army.
Nepal, which began contributing peacekeepers to United Nations missions in 1958, ranks among the leading troop-contributing countries. Currently, 4,179 Nepali Army personnel are deployed across nine UN peacekeeping missions worldwide.
So far, 74 Nepali soldiers have lost their lives in the course of peacekeeping service, while 77 have been injured in the line of duty.
