KATHMANDU, Dec 8: The Embassy of Nepal in Thailand is set to organize the Lumbini–Nepal Mini Marathon in May 2026 to mark the birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha and promote Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, at the international level.
The marathon will be held in the first week of May 2026, coinciding with the third week of Baisakh 2083. The event will feature 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer races, according to a press statement issued by the Embassy.

A discussion program on the event’s preparation was held in Bangkok on Friday with representatives from several Nepali and Thai organizations. Participants included Nepal Airlines, Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Thailand, People of Nepali Origin Association, Thai–Nepal Association, Thai–Nepal Friendship Association, Nepalis working in the UN system and other international institutions, professors and students from the Asian Institute of Technology, King Mongkut University, and Siam University, representatives from Western Union, and Nepali entrepreneurs based in Thailand, according to the Embassy.
An organizing committee has been formed under the patronage of Nepal’s Ambassador to Thailand, Dhan Bahadur Oli. Deputy Chief of Mission Moti Bahadur Shrees will serve as the convener, the press statement said.
The Embassy stated that marathons worldwide serve as an effective tool for tourism promotion. The event aims to highlight Lumbini as the birthplace of Buddha and promote Nepal’s tourism, cuisine, culture, and exportable goods in Thailand, the Embassy said.
