KATHMANDU, Nov 10: The Government of Nepal has appointed Additional Inspector General (AIG) Dan Bahadur Karki as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the topmost post in the police force.
Karki is currently serving at the Kathmandu Valley Police Office in Ranipokhari.
A meeting of the Council of Ministers on Monday made the decision to appoint Karki as the head of the 75,000-strong police force.

The move comes ahead of the mandatory retirement of the incumbent IGP, Chandra Kuber Khapung, who will retire at midnight on November 12, after completing his 30-year service tenure as per the Police Regulations.
Karki’s role during the second day of Gen Z protest on September 9 had courted controversy. Many had criticised him for letting the police stationed across the valley to let down their guard while others had praised his decision of using minimal force on the second day. The Ranipokhari office was vacant during the first day of the protest.
During his tenure as Deputy Inspector General (DIG), he commanded the Lumbini Province Police, and as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), he oversaw the Kathmandu District Police, including managing sensitive cases such as the Bhutanese refugee issue.
Born in July 1972, Karki joined the police force in March 1998. An alumnus of various international police training programs, Karki has also served as the central spokesperson for the Nepal Police, bringing extensive experience in both operational and strategic policing.
