Govt bans sale, distribution and consumption of alcohol until election

KATHMANDU, Feb 26: The sale, distribution, and consumption of alcoholic beverages have been prohibited from Thursday until the end of the election period.



The decision was made by the High-Level Election Security Committee, which imposed the ban starting seven days before the voting day and will remain in effect until the final election results are announced.

The Election Commission (EC) said the decision was implemented to ensure that the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5 is conducted in a free, fair, credible, and peaceful environment.


Similarly, according to the Election Security Committee’s decision, election campaigning will also be prohibited starting from 12 midnight on March 2. During this period, the Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed Chief District Officers and security agencies across all districts to strictly enforce the election code of conduct.
