Department of Commerce takes action against firms for violating...
KATHMANDU, April 21: Trying to look busy all of a sudden, the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection has stepped up market inspections to “protect consumer rights.” Apparently, checking a handful of shops at a time was getting old, so now they’re going big.
On Monday alone, the department inspected 53 businesses and firms in Ward No. 1 (Durbar Marg) and Ward No. 30 (Kamalpokhari) of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. After the inspections, it issued corrective directives to all the firms. No gold stars handed out, in case you were wondering.
The department says it has been carrying out regular monitoring in the presence of consumer rights activists and representatives of concerned bodies. It also claims that necessary instructions and actions have been taken in line with the Consumer Protection Act, 2018, and the Consumer Protection Regulations, 2019. Because nothing says “accountability” like citing the rulebook after the fact.
