KATHMANDU, Jan 11: Nepali Congress general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma have called on delegates to take part in the special convention, saying it is necessary to uphold the party statute and keep the party active.
In a joint statement, they said Clause 17(2) of the Nepali Congress statute makes it a legal obligation to convene a special convention within three months of a formal demand.
They said that when convention delegates register an application citing specific reasons, including the need to strengthen the party in a changing political situation, frame policies in line with public sentiment, and take special decisions for the party’s overall rebuilding through leadership infused with new energy, it becomes the responsibility of the central leadership to hold the special general convention (SGC).
Thapa and Sharma said they remain committed to keeping the party united even in difficult circumstances. They said that on October 15, 2025, an application demanding a special convention was registered at the party’s central office with signatures of 54.58 percent of convention delegates.
They also noted that following the Gen Z movement of September 8 and 9, 2025, voices calling for leadership change had also emerged within the Nepali Congress.
