KATHMANDU, Nov 7: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case at the Special Court against two individuals accused of embezzling Value Added Tax (VAT) amounting to Rs 12.36 million.
According to the CIAA, the accused are Tilak Ale, former tax officer at the Inland Revenue Office in Dharan, and Santosh Kumar Basnet, managing director of Swaminarayan Nirman Services Pvt Ltd. The anti-graft body has sought recovery of the embezzled amount, an equivalent fine, and jail terms for both accused.

Sundarharaincha Municipality in Morang had awarded a Rs 95.15 million (excluding VAT) contract to Swaminarayan Nirman Sewa Pvt Ltd, Dharan, for the excavation of river-based materials from the Gachhiya Khola.
The company was required to pay Rs 12.36 million in VAT to the tax office; however, according to the CIAA, the amount was misappropriated in collusion between the contractor and the tax officer.
