KATHMANDU, Feb 24: Nearly Rs 15 million was raised within 24 hours for the treatment of Nepal women’s national football team captain Sabitra Bhandari “Samba,” prompting her to request supporters to stop further contributions.
Bhandari had appealed for financial assistance on Monday, citing lack of support from the government and the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) for treatment of her serious right knee injury. Following the appeal, over Rs 10 million was deposited into her Nepali bank account, while Rs 4.5 million (around NZD 52,000) was collected through an international platform.

Her estimated treatment cost stands at around Rs 10 million. On her Facebook page, Bhandari said the funds raised would cover not only medical expenses but also accommodation and transportation costs during treatment in Qatar. She thanked supporters and requested that donations to both accounts be stopped.
Bhandari suffered a complete ACL tear in her right knee during an A-League Women match in Australia while playing for Wellington Phoenix. The injury is expected to sideline her for nine to 12 months.
She has vowed to return stronger and wear the national jersey again.
