KATHMANDU, May 3: Vice President (VP) Ramsahay Prasad Yadav has extended his best wishes to journalists, media professionals, and all Nepalis at home and abroad on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day today, May 3, 2026, through a message shared on social media.
Press is oxygen to Democracy: Former President Dr Yadav
In his statement, the VP noted that media today is no longer confined to print or broadcast. Social media has accelerated the reach of news, but the influence of algorithms can sometimes push accurate reporting into the background while amplifying misleading content. This, he said, has created new challenges for both journalists and the public in identifying truth, making informed choices, and promoting responsible communication.
Yadav emphasized that press freedom guaranteed by the Constitution is not only a right of journalists but a shared right of all citizens to know the truth, express opinions, and make informed decisions.
In his message, he acknowledged that journalists in Nepal have shown courage in exposing the truth even under difficult conditions. However, he pointed out that economic pressure, political interference, and the spread of misinformation on social media have added further challenges, requiring the media to be more refined, disciplined, and responsible in its work. He stressed that constitutional provisions on press freedom serve as a guiding principle in addressing these challenges.
Highlighting that Nepal’s Constitution enshrines press freedom as a fundamental right, Vice President Yadav described a free press as the backbone of democracy. He expressed hope that journalism in Nepal will continue to move forward fearlessly while exercising and protecting this right.
