KATHMANDU, Feb 26: As many as 219 out of 250 candidates in Kathmandu, the federal capital city, have so far opened bank accounts.
For the HoR election to be held on March 5, 250 candidates have registered their nominations in 10 constituencies of Kathmandu and are actively advancing their poll campaigns.
Among them, 219 have opened bank accounts to make election-related expenses through the banking system, informed Srijana Rayamajhi, Information Officer at the District Returning Office, Kathmandu.

It may be noted that the Election Commission (EC) earlier had directed political parties that candidates are not allowed to make election-related expenses through any means other than banks or financial institutions. It is also inserted in the election code of conduct.
However, all candidates in the capital Kathmandu have not yet opened bank accounts despite the arrangement.
According to the election regulations, candidates are allowed to spend between Rs 2.5 million and Rs 3.3 million based on geography.
EC informed that monitoring will also be conducted to track where the money from the candidate's account goes for promoting good governance.
Regarding the first-past-the-post system, of the 3,406 candidates in 165 constituencies across the country, only 1,389 have opened bank accounts so far, according to Assistant Spokesperson of the Commission, Kul Bahadur GC.
