POKHARA, April 21: As geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to disrupt travel patterns for European and American tourists, Pokhara’s tourism sector has found steady support from Indian visitors. Hotels across the city are currently hosting a significant number of Indian tourists, with businesses reporting benefits across mid-range to high-end accommodations.

Tourism entrepreneurs say that after domestic travelers, Indian visitors now make up the largest share of arrivals in Pokhara. The influx is partly seasonal, as rising temperatures in Indian cities prompt travelers to seek cooler destinations. According to stakeholders, this trend has remained consistent over the years and continues to sustain the local tourism economy.

Data from the tourism board indicate that, on average, Indian nationals account for around 25 percent of total international arrivals to Nepal by air each month. However, in Pokhara, that share is notably higher due to the city’s proximity and accessibility. Officials say that Pokhara’s ease of travel—both by road and air—has made it a preferred destination for Indian tourists.

A senior tourism official in Gandaki Province stated that Pokhara has significantly benefited from Indian tourism, with current hotel occupancy reflecting a strong presence of Indian guests. Domestic tourists contribute around 50 percent to Pokhara’s tourism market, while Indian visitors account for at least 35 percent, making them the second-largest segment.

He added that the surge in Indian arrivals began after the COVID-19 pandemic and has remained stable since, despite occasional disruptions caused by isolated incidents. The accessibility of Pokhara has further boosted arrivals.

Pokhara also serves as a gateway for Indian pilgrims heading to Muktinath, while many others visit to escape extreme summer heat. As a result, tourism-related businesses—from hotels to local service providers—have seen sustained benefits.

With Chinese tourist arrivals yet to recover to expected levels, Indian visitors have filled a critical gap. Tourism authorities and local entrepreneurs have also intensified promotional campaigns in Indian cities, including initiatives such as the “Chaliye Pokhara” campaign, to attract more visitors.

Tourism entrepreneurs confirm that Indian tourists are supporting a wide range of businesses, from small lodges to larger hotels. A hotel operator noted that Indian visitors have become a reliable pillar of the tourism industry, not only in Pokhara but also in nearby destinations like Sauraha.

Hotel Association Pokhara officials also report that Indian tourist inflow has remained strong since the Nepali New Year period and continues to sustain the sector. They emphasized that this consistent arrival has helped offset the decline in long-haul travelers.

Typically, this season sees a high number of tourists from Europe and the United States, especially for trekking. However, ongoing tensions in the Middle East have affected travel plans, leading to cancellations and early returns by some visitors. In contrast, domestic and Indian tourists have ensured steady footfall in Pokhara during the New Year period.

Former tourism officials also stress that without Indian tourists, Pokhara’s tourism industry could have faced serious setbacks. They expect the inflow to remain strong in the coming days, particularly as temperatures continue to rise across Indian cities. Additionally, Indian tourists are increasingly exploring surrounding rural destinations, spreading tourism benefits beyond the city center.
