KATHMANDU, July 17: The Central Zoo in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, reopened to the public on Friday after authorities brought a bird flu outbreak under control.
The zoo had remained closed since June 19 after avian influenza (bird flu) infections were confirmed in crows, vultures, ducks and other birds.
According to the zoo administration, operations resumed after infected birds were treated, sanitation and other necessary control measures were completed, and environmental sample tests confirmed the absence of the avian influenza virus.

The administration said a meeting of senior officials from the Department of Livestock Services, the Central Veterinary Laboratory and the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division on Thursday decided to reopen the zoo.
Zoo Spokesperson and Information Officer Ganesh Koirala said the zoo will remain open for entry from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, while visitors must leave the premises by 5:00 pm.
The zoo management has urged visitors to maintain a safe distance from animals and birds while observing them.
It said enclosures that previously housed infected birds have been cordoned off with red ribbons and requested visitors not to linger around those areas while maintaining a safe distance.
Visitors have also been requested not to consume food they bring in open areas, to dispose of waste properly in designated dustbins after use, and to wear masks at all times.
