Kathmandu police urge landlords to require police clearance reports from tenants

KATHMANDU, April 19: The Kathmandu District Police Range has urged landlords in the capital to mandatorily request a police clearance report from tenants before renting out rooms, citing challenges faced during criminal investigations.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Superintendent of Police Pawan Bhattarai said investigations are often hindered due to a lack of basic information about tenants. He noted that in many cases, individuals live in rented rooms for years, yet landlords do not have even their phone numbers, addresses, or photographs on record.

“Tenants may stay for up to 10 years, but landlords often lack even basic details about them. That’s why we are requesting landlords to ask for a police report before renting rooms,” Bhattarai said.

Police said that with the growing number of incidents in Kathmandu, it has become increasingly difficult to trace individuals involved in crimes due to insufficient tenant records. In several cases, incidents occurring inside houses have gone unnoticed for months due to a lack of proper documentation.

Bhattarai clarified that while such measures may not prevent crimes entirely, they would significantly help in responding effectively once an incident occurs. He also stressed that landlords should at minimum maintain copies of tenants’ citizenship documents, photographs, and contact numbers.

The police have called on all concerned to adopt the practice to strengthen urban security and improve investigative efficiency.
