KATHMANDU, April 21: Nepali Congress (NC) is preparing to establish a “Leadership Academy” aimed at institutionalising political training within the party and reshaping how future leaders are selected and prepared for public office.
Positioned as a structured training institute under the party’s Central Policy Research and Training Academy, the initiative is intended to equip party members with knowledge of the party’s history, ideology, policies, and governance systems, while also offering leadership and skills-based development courses.
The Academy is expected to function not only as a training centre but also as a filter for political candidacy, with completion of designated courses becoming a requirement for those aspiring to contest elections or take on executive responsibilities.

Party Spokesperson Devaraj Chalise described the initiative in clear terms, saying the academy will function much like a school with a defined curriculum and fixed duration of training.
He explained that those who fail to complete the prescribed training will not be considered eligible for candidacy. The underlying intent, he said, is to gradually institutionalise merit-based political selection and ensure that individuals entering public office have a clear understanding of governance, responsibilities, and public accountability.
The proposed training structure will also extend to elected representatives at local, provincial, and federal levels, with refresher programmes designed to update them on party policies and governance practices.
The broader vision behind the academy, according to the party, is to professionalise political participation and strengthen internal capacity. It is also expected to standardise the preparation process for aspirants seeking roles in government, ensuring they are better equipped to handle administrative and policy responsibilities.
Party leaders say detailed curriculum design and operational guidelines are still being finalised, after which the full structure, training modules, and implementation framework will be made public.
