KATHMANDU, Sep 7: The main coalition partner in the government, Nepali Congress, has decided not to strictly enforce the decision to ban social media and instead seek alternatives until a law is formulated.
A meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee, held this morning at the residence of Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba in Budhanilkantha, concluded that the social media ban should not be strictly implemented until legislation is enacted.

Leader Bal Bahadur KC said the party decided not to strictly enforce the ban until a law is in place. He further noted that, in line with the Supreme Court’s order, the government should first formulate its own law concerning such applications.
The meeting also resolved to hold discussions with the government and explore alternatives to banning social media.
Congress made this decision at a time when the government is facing widespread criticism for blocking unregistered social media platforms, including Facebook, in Nepal.
