KATHMANDU, April 19: A total of 125 contracts run by the Infrastructure Development Office (IDO), Chitwan has come to a standstill due to the rising cost of fuels and shortage of construction materials.

Birendra Kumar Chaudhary, chief of the Chitwan IDO, out of 267 projects in this office, 217 are currently being operated after contract agreements have been signed. Following the situation that surfaced after the Middle East crisis, the price of petrol has gone up by around Rs 65 per liter and the cost of diesel has increased by around Rs 80 per liter. Similarly, the prices of iron rod and cement have inclined by a notable amount.

Citing the situation, construction entrepreneurs have been demanding the government to declare a ‘construction holiday.’ Chaudhary said construction entrepreneurs in this regard have submitted a letter also to the IDO to materialize the demand.

The Chitwan based IDO has been constructing 19 bridges in the region. “If the similar situation persists, it is certain that 50-60 percent of the work cannot be completed on time,” said Chaudhary.
