KATHMANDU, April 23: Police have arrested three individuals on charges of defrauding victims of Rs 4.813 million by falsely promising overseas employment. The suspects were made public on Wednesday.

According to Rameshwar Karki, spokesperson for the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, those arrested include 32-year-old Shakti Lama, originally from Manahari Rural Municipality-2 in Makwanpur and currently residing in Dallu, Kathmandu-15; 49-year-old Bishnu Budhathoki from Triyuga Municipality-10 in Udayapur, now living in Chandragiri, Kathmandu; and 28-year-old Sushmita Maharjan of Kirtipur Municipality-10, Kathmandu.
Police said Lama allegedly collected Rs 2.663 million promising jobs in Azerbaijan and Fiji; Budhathoki took Rs 450,000 with assurances of sending victims to Brunei; and Maharjan received Rs 1.7 million claiming to arrange employment in Austria. All three reportedly went out of contact without sending the victims abroad, leading to complaints.
Investigations also revealed that Lama had been on the run in a separate banking offense case involving Rs 500,000 under the jurisdiction of the Area Police Office, Tulsipur, Dang.
Police have sent all three accused to the Department of Foreign Employment on Wednesday for further investigation and necessary legal action.
