KATHMANDU, April 19: CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet has expressed dissatisfaction over what he described as “unnecessary interpretations” surrounding a recent meeting between party chair KP Sharma Oli and CPN leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
Basnet said the meeting, which took place while Dahal was unwell, was a goodwill visit but had been given “multiple meanings” by critics. He argued that forces opposed to socialism, people’s democracy, and national development were naturally inclined to oppose any sign of unity among communist forces.

“Interpreting a goodwill meeting in a way that suggests ‘communist unity would be disastrous’ is expected from those who do not support socialism, development, or national interest,” Basnet wrote on social media.
He also expressed surprise that even some leaders associated with the CPN-UML had engaged in what he termed unnecessary rumors and criticism regarding the meeting.
Basnet’s remarks come amid growing political speculation over the significance of the Oli–Dahal interaction, which some observers have linked to possible shifts in leftist political dynamics.
