Gautam, who currently serves as the head of the party’s publicity department, had filed his candidacy for the position at the party’s 11th National General Convention. He had contested as an independent candidate after not being included in the Oli panel.

Speaking to Republica, Gautam said he decided to withdraw his candidacy to protect the party and its leadership amid what he described as a “multi-pronged siege and attack” against the UML. “I have formally withdrawn my candidacy for the post of deputy general secretary to defend the party and its leadership. I have now left three candidates from each of the two groups to compete,” he said.
