KATHMANDU, Jan 27: Preparations for the March 5 House of Representatives (HoR) election have entered the final phase, with authorities intensifying efforts as polling day approaches.
In Kathmandu, which has the highest number of constituencies in the country—10 in total—women have been appointed as chief election officers in nine constituencies. Officials say the move reflects confidence in women’s leadership in ensuring a free, peaceful and credible election, particularly in the aftermath of the Gen Z movement.
Chamila Bhattarai, chief election officer of Kathmandu Constituency No. 3, said the responsibility entrusted to women should be seen as a mark of trust.

“Assigning women to lead election management in a large and sensitive district like Kathmandu sends a positive message. We are committed to carrying out this responsibility with integrity,” she said.
Bhattarai, a director at the Financial Comptroller General Office, said women tend to approach responsibilities with composure and practicality, which helps in election management. She added that her experience from previous local-level elections has strengthened her capacity to handle the role.
Similarly, Shanti Neupane, chief election officer of Kathmandu Constituency No. 2, said her primary duty is to conduct the election in a peaceful, civilised and impartial manner. She noted that balancing professional responsibilities with family life remains a challenge, but one she is managing.
