KATHMANDU, Feb 27: Of the 3,406 direct candidates registered for the House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5, only 1,670 have opened bank accounts, according to the Election Commission (EC).
Similarly, out of the 65 political parties participating in the elections, only 11 have opened accounts. EC Assistant Spokesperson Sangita Pun Shris said that parties that have opened accounts so far include Nepali Congress, Rastriya Janamorcha, CPN United, Nepali Communist Party (NCP), Nepali Party for Nepal, Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), United Citizens Party, Miteri Party, Nepal Janata Sanrakshan Party, Nepal Workers Peasants Party, and Rastriya Janmukti Party.

The bank accounts have been mandated to ensure transparency in financial assistance received by political parties and candidates, compliance with election spending limits under the election law, and effective monitoring.
According to the “House of Representatives Election Campaign Bank Account (Operation and Management) Procedure, 2082,” all political parties, party candidates, and independent candidates registered with the commission for the proportional and first-past-the-post election system must open a bank account for election campaign purposes. All income and expenses related to campaign funding must be conducted through this account.
