Govt announces 1,000 km of road blacktopping and 200 new bridges in upcoming FY

The government has allocated Rs 37.46 billion for upgrading the East-West Highway into a four-lane road within the next five years. Key sections such as Narayanghat–Butwal and Kamala–Kanchanpur are expected to be completed within the current phase of the project.

KATHMANDU, May 29: The government has announced plans to construct 1,000 kilometers of blacktopped roads and build 200 new bridges in the upcoming fiscal year 2026/27.



Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle made the announcement while presenting the national budget on Friday, stating that major infrastructure expansion remains a key priority.

The government has allocated Rs 37.46 billion for upgrading the East-West Highway into a four-lane road within the next five years. Key sections such as Narayanghat–Butwal and Kamala–Kanchanpur are expected to be completed within the current phase of the project.


Similarly, Rs 17.64 billion has been allocated for the Kathmandu_Terai Fast Track (expressway), including construction of 40 bridges and 4 tunnels. The Postal Highway has been allocated Rs 4.65 billion, while the Karnali Highway and Mid-Hill Highway have been allocated Rs 1 billion and Rs 2.16 billion respectively.


Officials said the large-scale infrastructure push is aimed at improving national connectivity and supporting long-term economic growth.
