BANGKOK, Dec 15: The Nepali Embassy in Bangkok organised a special programme to honour Nepali runners Sanmaya Budha and Ranmaya Budha for their remarkable achievements at the internationally renowned trail running competition “100 KM Chiang Mai Thailand by UTMB”, held last week in Chiang Mai, a popular tourist and adventure sports destination in Thailand.
According to a press statement issued by the Embassy, the competition is part of the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) series, regarded as one of the most prestigious and challenging ultra-trail running events in the world. The race covered northern Thailand’s mountainous terrain, jungles, steep ascents and descents, and other demanding geographical features, attracting professional and experienced runners from around the globe.
In the gruelling 100-kilometre trail run, Sanmaya Budha, a female runner from Jumla district, secured fourth place, bringing international recognition to Nepal and Nepali athletes. Her sister, Ranmaya Budha, competed in the 50-kilometre race and finished seventh, demonstrating the exceptional capabilities of Nepali runners.

During the ceremony at the Embassy, Sanmaya Budha shared her inspiring journey, highlighting the challenges posed by Jumla’s remote geography, her difficult upbringing, continuous struggle, rigorous training and unwavering self-confidence, which moved and inspired the audience.
The Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Moti Bahadur Shris, formally honoured the runners by presenting them with traditional scarves (khadas) and tokens of affection, congratulating them on their international achievements. He said the success of Nepali athletes on the global stage helps promote Nepal internationally and reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to supporting such talent in the future. He also highlighted plans to organise the Lumbini–Nepal Mini Marathon.
The event was attended by Embassy staff, representatives of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), the Thai–Nepali Association, various organisations and around 25 members of the Nepali community involved in education, professional fields and business, the press release said.
During the programme, Kumar Karki, president of PNO, provided Rs 100,000 in financial support to the runners. Other members of the Nepali community and NRNA officials also pledged moral and financial support to encourage the athletes.
According to the press release, the event not only honoured the international accomplishments of Nepali athletes but also contributed to promoting unity, pride and inspiration within the Nepali community.
