KATHMANDU, Oct 12: Senior leader of CPN (Unified Socialist) Jhalanath Khanal has cautioned party leadership against hasty unification with the CPN (Maoist Center), urging the party chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal to focus on internal restructuring.
Khanal’s remarks come as reports suggest that Chairman of CPN (Maoist Centre) Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Chairman Nepal are in the final stages of preparing a unity deal between the two leftist parties.
Khanal in a statement from India, where he is currently staying for the treatment of his wife—who suffered severe burn injuries during the Gen Z movement— said that he had not been consulted or informed about the modality of the proposed unity.

“I am currently in India for my wife’s treatment. I have heard that homework for party unity is being done there. But I have not received any document or information about the modality of unity,” Khanal said.
He stressed that the Unified Socialist needs comprehensive reorganization before pursuing any merger. “The party must first be restructured and transformed into a revolutionary force. Only then will unity be meaningful,” he said, adding that “playing the unseasonal tune of unity” could weaken the party’s relevance.
“I have always supported broad left unity,” he said, “but everyone should be careful—the time for that has not yet come.”
According to party insiders, both Dahal and Nepal have intensified discussions on party unification.
