KATHMANDU, April 25: With a heavy presence of security personnel, the government began deploying bulldozers early Saturday morning to clear the squatter settlement in Thapathali.
The demolition is being carried out as part of a long-term plan for river corridor development and the conservation of the Bagmati Civilization.

Police and municipal police personnel deployed at the site have been assisting residents in carrying their belongings and relocating them to safer places.
Unlike previous eviction drives, the situation appeared relatively calm this time.
Concerned authorities had repeatedly issued public notices earlier, instructing residents to vacate the area.
The demolition drive will continue on Sunday as well.
