KATHMANDU, Nov 19: A curfew has been imposed in the area surrounding Simara Airport in Bara after tensions escalated following protests launched by Gen Z youths ahead of CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet’s planned arrival. The curfew has come into effect from 12 PM and will remain in place until 8 PM.
Basnet, a UML Standing Committee member and in-charge of the Youth Association Nepal, was scheduled to attend a program in Bara.

UML leaders Achyut Mainali, Kisan Shrestha and Jwalakumari Sah are currently at the airport. Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force (APF) personnel have been deployed to beef up security in and around the airport area.
Speaking to Republica, Bara Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra said efforts are underway to bring the situation under control. He added that further information is being collected about the incident. He indicated that a curfew could be enforced, if necessary.
Internal flights to Simara have been affected for hours due to the unrest at the airport.
