KATHMANDU, April 23: GenZ Red Force Nepal has warned of launching protests if the government does not immediately withdraw its directive to clear informal settlements.
In a statement issued by central coordinator Smriti Timalsina, the group strongly condemned the government’s move to evacuate squatter settlements, calling it inhumane and contrary to past electoral commitments.
The statement said Prime Minister Balen Shah had instructed authorities to clear encroached settlements within the weekend, drawing serious concern from the organization. It criticized the decision as unjust and “self-defeating,” particularly as it involves deploying bulldozers against poor and marginalized communities without alternatives, compensation, or proper resettlement—just ahead of the monsoon season.

The group also accused ruling leaders, including Rabi Lamichhane, of going back on election promises not to displace informal settlers. It alleged that such communities were used as “vote banks” during elections and later abandoned.
GenZ Red Force has put forward a four-point demand, urging the government to honor its electoral commitments, control rising prices affecting livelihoods, halt the eviction drive immediately, and ensure dignified alternatives for affected communities.
The organization warned that it would be compelled to launch strong protests if the government fails to withdraw the order and ensure proper management. It also stated that the government would be responsible for any consequences arising from such actions.
