KATHMANDU, April 23: Home Minister Sudan Gurung resigned on Wednesday amid mounting criticism over his alleged business links, share transactions and financial dealings with a controversial entrepreneur, saying his departure would ensure a fair and impartial investigation.
Gurung submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Balen Shah, stating that public concerns regarding his financial activities should be taken seriously. In a statement posted on social media, he said stepping down was necessary to avoid any conflict of interest and to allow an independent probe into the allegations.
He stressed that integrity and public trust were more important than holding office, adding that growing public expectations for good governance, transparency and accountability must be reflected in leadership. Gurung also urged the public and media to uphold truth and ethical responsibility.
His resignation follows scrutiny over his alleged links with entrepreneur Dipak Bhatt, as well as questions surrounding his asset disclosures and investments, including in micro-insurance ventures. Reports also suggested that funds received by a social organisation he operated, Hami Nepal, were routed through a personal account, further intensifying pressure on him to step down.

Two ministers resign within a month of govt formation
Gurung’s exit comes less than a month after the formation of the new government and marks the second ministerial departure in quick succession.
Earlier, Labour, Employment and Social Security Minister Deepak Kumar Sah was dismissed over allegations that he misused his position to facilitate his wife’s involvement in a previously inactive health insurance-related body. Acting on the recommendation of the ruling party’s chairman Ravi Lamichhane, the prime minister removed Sah just 14 days after his appointment.
Following Sah’s dismissal, Gauri Kumari was appointed Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, while Ramji Yadav took charge as Labour Minister.
The back-to-back exit of two ministers within weeks of the government’s formation has raised questions about accountability and stability in the new administration.
