Just a day earlier, on Wednesday, he had announced his resignation as chairman of the Nepal Samajbadi Party (Naya Shakti), saying the decision was aimed at paving the way for a new generation of leadership.

“I am not stepping away from any movement. I was part of the campaign to build alternatives for the country yesterday, I am part of it today, and I will continue to be part of it tomorrow,” Bhattarai said.

He also reiterated his call for the election of a directly elected executive prime minister to strengthen the country’s governance system.
