KATHMANDU, March 26: Rastriya Mukti Party Party Chair Rajendra Mahato has said that the ego and divisions among Madheshi parties were the main reasons behind their electoral defeat, pushing voters to seek alternative options.
Speaking on Nagarik Frontline on Wednesday, Mahato said public frustration over the parties’ failure to unite led voters to choose what he described as a “wholesale” solution—electing a Madheshi face directly to the prime minister’s position in the hope of resolving their issues.
Mahato added that the failure of Madheshi parties to contest under a single election symbol was the primary reason for their defeat. “We tried to unite six parties, but leaders did not agree. There was overconfidence and ego,” he said. “People questioned what divided parties could achieve and instead voted directly for a prime minister. We must respect that verdict.”

He added that as parties with a long history of struggle for identity and rights became fragmented, voters were compelled to look for a “fast-track” solution.
Mahato also accused the Rastriya Swatantra Party, the Nepali Congress, and communist parties of betraying Madheshi voters. He said even so-called new parties lack a clear agenda on federalism and inclusion. “The RSP will also merely use a Madheshi face,” he added. “Votes were secured by projecting a face, but on issues of rights and identity, these parties will betray people just as in the past.”
