DANG, April 29: Millennium Challenge Account Nepal (MCA-Nepal) has officially marked the start of upgrading works on the 40-kilometre Dhan Khola–Lamahi section of the East-West Highway under its Road Maintenance Project.

The project will introduce modern construction technologies in Nepal for the first time, including Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) and Superpave methods, which are expected to improve road quality, durability and environmental sustainability. Authorities say the approach will also reduce costs by reusing existing asphalt materials.

As part of the upgrade, the highway section will be widened to 12 metres, including a 7-metre carriageway and 2.5-metre shoulders on both sides.

Speaking at the launch event, Lumbini Province Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya welcomed the use of advanced construction technologies, saying the improved road would enhance safety and reliability while boosting local economic activities such as trade, agriculture and small enterprises.

Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy Scott Urbon said the project reflects the partnership between Nepal and the United States under the MCC Nepal Compact, aimed at building resilient infrastructure, lowering transport costs and improving connectivity.

Similarly, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Sushil Babu Dhakal said MCA-Nepal’s investments align with government priorities to strengthen infrastructure and expand economic opportunities.

MCC Deputy Resident Country Director Sanjay Poudyal said the project demonstrates commitment to long-term, high-quality infrastructure development using advanced engineering methods.

MCA-Nepal Executive Director Khadga Bahadur Bisht said the project would be implemented with a focus on efficiency, transparency and quality, with support from the Government of Nepal and key stakeholders including the Department of Roads and the MCA-Nepal Board.

The Road Maintenance Project is part of the broader MCC Nepal Compact, which aims to reduce transportation costs and improve road conditions across the country.
