BHAKTAPUR, July 20: Leaders of the Nepali Congress (NC) have accused the government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen) of violating the Constitution and creating an atmosphere of fear, while calling for an immediate national convention of the party’s general convention representatives to prevent a split.
The demand was made during a gathering of NC leaders and cadres in Bhaktapur, which concluded that the party’s internal disputes had reached a critical stage and that only a united and undivided Nepali Congress could safeguard democracy and the Constitution.
The meeting was attended by Bhaktapur Congress President Durlabh Thapa, former central committee member Govinda Bhattarai, Umesh Jung Rayamajhi, Man Bahadur Nepali, Kiran Paudel, Guru Baral, Laxmi Khatriwada, Pushpa Parajuli, Sita Devkota, Bidya Timilsina, Usha Rawat, Laxman Bahadur Basnet, Bal Chandra Paudel, Binod Kayastha, Dhruva Adhikari, Bhupendra Thapa, Satyaraj Bhandari, Chandradevi Joshi, Rudra Bahadur Khadka, Rajendra Talchabhadel, Hasta Bahadur Malla, Pramod Rimal, Uttam Chapagai, Anil Bhuju, Keshav Dhungana and others.
Living with fear
Speakers said the weakening of the Nepali Congress would not only weaken democracy but also undermine the country’s sovereignty.
Most speakers accused the current government of violating the Constitution and laws while creating fear and intimidation among industrialists, businesspeople, civil servants, workers, landless people and other sections of society.
They also urged party leaders and cadres at all levels to avoid divisions in the name of regular or special general conventions and instead rebuild and reorganize the party by upholding the ideals of BP Koirala and the sacrifices of the martyrs. They said such an approach would help attract a new generation to the party.
The participants also concluded that discussions should be expanded to the grassroots level to prevent any split within the Nepali Congress.
