KATHMANDU, Dec 30: CPN-UML Vice-Chairman and former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa on Tuesday said that the Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML could cooperate in the upcoming March 5 House of Representatives (HoR) election, citing the need for a united political response to the country’s deepening crisis.
Addressing a programme organised by the Madan–Ashrit Memorial Foundation in Kathmandu, Thapa stressed the urgency of collaboration between the two major political parties, arguing that joint action was necessary to restore democracy. He said that NC and UML could share equal seats in the HoR poll.

“Through a joint movement of NC and UML—the two major political forces—we can restore democracy,” Thapa said. “If we move forward with this strategy, democracy can be re-established, and such an alliance can safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and existence.”
Thapa said both parties should promptly and carefully formulate a common strategy and action plan, whether by restoring the dissolved parliament or by contesting elections together.
He noted that there remains time until March 5 to reinstate the dissolved parliament, either through judicial intervention or street protests, adding that the scheduled election may or may not take place depending on political developments.
“Even if elections are held, NC and UML must form a united front to ensure the victory of democratic forces and defeat regressive elements,” he said.
Thapa also described the protests of September 8 and 9 as a “counter-revolution” and warned that the country is facing a serious political crisis.
