KATHMANDU, May 22: In a landmark achievement blending mountaineering, diplomacy, and international friendship, U.S. Embassy Nepal’s Public Affairs Chief Mike Harker successfully summited Mount Everest on May 20, becoming the first serving American Foreign Service Officer to reach the top of the world’s highest mountain.

According to a statement shared by the U.S. Embassy Nepal, Harker reached the 8,849-meter summit at 9:10 AM on May 20 during a personal expedition that marked the culmination of a two-decade connection with Nepal and the Himalayas.

The embassy described the feat as a symbolic milestone ahead of “Freedom 250” — the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence — saying the climb reflects the American spirit of determination, resilience, and exploration.

Harker’s journey to Everest began nearly 20 years ago during a 2006 trek to Annapurna Base Camp, an experience that sparked what the embassy called his “lifelong bond with Nepal.”

The successful ascent also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nepal and the United States, which spans nearly eight decades. The embassy noted that sustainable adventure tourism continues to strengthen global connections while contributing significantly to local Himalayan economies.

The statement further emphasized the critical role played by Nepal’s Sherpa community in Himalayan mountaineering.

“Their bravery, world-class expertise, and dedication are the true backbone of Himalayan expeditions,” the embassy said, adding that the summit would not have been possible without their support and leadership.

The embassy also underscored the importance of protecting Everest and the fragile Himalayan environment to ensure that future generations can continue to draw inspiration and livelihoods from the region.

Mount Everest remains one of Nepal’s strongest tourism draws, attracting climbers and trekkers from around the world each year and generating vital income for local communities, guides, and expedition workers.

Harker’s summit comes during Nepal’s busy spring climbing season, when hundreds of climbers attempt to scale Everest under often challenging and unpredictable conditions.
