KATHMANDU, Jan 23: Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal has directed authorities to expedite the transfer of juvenile offenders aged above 18 to Nuwakot based correction center, following unrest at the Juvenile Correction center in Sanothimi, Bhaktapur, on the night of January 22.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Shraddha Shrestha, chiefs of security agencies and senior officials.

The meeting reviewed recurring problems arising from housing offenders above and below 18 years of age together. Minister Aryal stressed that while full compliance with human rights must be ensured, impunity would not be tolerated. He instructed security agencies and concerned officials to take firm measures to prevent a repeat of such incidents and to strengthen the management of correction homes.
As a sustainable solution, the ministry has ordered to convert a vacant block of Nuwakot Prison into a child correction facility and relocate juvenile offenders aged above 18 there.
Both ministers directed concerned agencies to enhance inter-ministerial coordination and ensure the swift transfer of those over 18 to Nuwakot.
