KATHMANDU, January 27: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is giving the southern lawn of Sainik Manch (i.e. Army pavilion) a green makeover. The KMC plans to plant Bermuda grass across the 61,263-square-meter lawn, transforming it into a cleaner, more accessible, and enjoyable space for the public.
Currently, the lawn serves as a playground for children and youth, a relaxation spot for senior citizens, and a venue for occasional public events. To tackle issues like dust and mud during the rainy season, KMC aims to create a smooth, grassy surface that encourages greater use of the area.

The project, estimated at Rs 27 million, has been awarded to a contractor through a tender process, with a completion deadline of mid-December 2026.
According to Senior Engineer Arjun Aryal of KMC’s Public Construction Department, the work will begin with levelling the ground, followed by a 3-inch layer of fertile soil, before the grass is planted. Maintenance will be made easier with eight overhead water collection pits, each 6 meters deep and 1.2 meters in diameter.
Once complete, the revamped lawn is expected to boost public access to open spaces, encourage social interaction, improve the urban environment, and enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal—offering a green oasis in the heart of Kathmandu.
