KATHMANDU, Jan 12: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has begun consultations with his close leaders regarding the Special General Convention (SGC) called by General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma.
The move comes as a majority of general convention representatives—including leaders from Koirala’s own faction—have participated in the SGC being held at Bhrikutimandap.

The consultations, currently underway at Koirala’s liaison office in Bishalnagar, involve central committee members close to him, district presidents, and legal experts.
Earlier on Sunday, at the start of the convention, Koirala released a video message stating that he was attempting to reconcile both sides within the party. However, the presence of his close representatives at the convention venue has added to the pressure on him to take a clearer position.
The SGC was called for January 11 and 12 after the party leadership declined to convene a regular general convention. Despite an appeal from the NC party establishment to halt the event, the general secretaries went ahead with the convention. The party later issued a press statement declaring the convention illegitimate and urging members not to participate.
On the second day, the closed-door session of the SGC is scheduled to begin on Monday.
According to organizers, a total of 2,662 general convention representatives registered their names in support of the SGC on Sunday itself. The number is expected to rise further as more representatives continue to register.
