KATHMANDU, Jan 7: Four major political parties have reached an agreement on the distribution of the 18 vacant seats in the National Assembly.
Under the seat-sharing deal, the Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML will each get seven seats, the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) three seats, and the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal (JSP-Nepal) one seat. NC and UML are currently holding meetings of their respective Central Working Committee and Central Committee to formally endorse the arrangement.

As part of the agreement, UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has been entrusted with finalising the party’s candidates for the upper house. According to a UML leader, internal discussions are underway on the candidacies of Roshni Meche, Menaka Kafle, Prem Dangal, Ram Kumari Jhakri, Deepak Paudel, Chakra Bahadur Parajuli, Rishi Sharma and Bal Bahadur Mahat.
Elections for 18 of the 19 vacant National Assembly seats will be held on a province-wise basis in coordination among the Nepali Congress, the NCP and the JSP-Nepal. JSP-Nepal has already decided to recommend Mahanta Thakur’s name for a seat in the National Assembly from Madhesh. However, both the Nepali Congress and the NCP have yet to announce their candidates.
According to the election schedule, nominations for the 18 seats must be filed by January 7, complaints can be lodged on January 8, and candidates may withdraw their nominations by January 11. Election symbols will be allotted on January 12, and voting will take place on January 25. The current seats will fall vacant on March 4, and the elections are required to be held at least one month prior to the vacancy.
