KATHMANDU, Feb 25: The government has reiterated that there is no security threat for the elections scheduled on March 5 and that the elections will be held successfully on the prescribed date.

Talking with the state-owned Rastriya Samachar Samiti, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal said most of the weapons looted from the security forces during September 8-9 Gen Z protests and violence have been recovered by the government. “In this context, there is no security threat from runaway inmates and looted weapons,” said Aryal.

At a time when suspicion has been raised at various fronts on whether the government could hold the general election on the stipulated date, the government has reiterated its position to maintain security for this purpose. The government’s announced election is just over a week away.

The missing 800 cache of firearms were not limited to pistols. It included military-grade rifles such as INSAS and SLRs, along with thousands of rounds of ammunition.

As of December, 2025, Nepal police is reported to have recovered around 750 looted weapons and arrested 10,000 escapes. Home Minister Aryal said that the police and concerned government authorities have been putting their full efforts to bring back the lost weapons and escaped prisoners.

“As there are no criminal activities reported by using the looted weapons in recent days, it can be assured that they will not create any insecurity during the election period,” Aryal added.
