KATHMANDU, Jan 6 : Violence targeting Bangladesh’s Hindu minority community escalated further on Monday night as 40-year-old shopkeeper Sarat Chakraborty Mani was fatally attacked with a sharp weapon in Narsingdi district, marking the sixth such killing in just 18 days.
Mani, who ran a grocery store in Charsindur Bazar, Palash sub-district, was ambushed by an unknown group. He sustained severe injuries and died en route to the hospital. Police have launched an investigation into the attack.
Two Hindu men killed in fresh Bangladesh religious unrest
Earlier on December 19, Mani had posted on Facebook expressing concern over the rising violence, describing his area as a “valley of death.”
This killing follows the January 5 murder of Rana Pratap Bairagi, a Hindu ice factory owner and executive editor of Bidi Khabar, who was shot in public in Monirampur, Jessore. Three attackers on a motorcycle dragged him into an alley and shot him in the head. Police recovered seven spent cartridges, and the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
The recent spate of killing has sparked alarm among Bangladesh’s Hindu community and human rights observers, highlighting a troubling rise in targeted violence.
