KATHMANDU, Jan 8: Following the call for a special general convention on January 11 and 12 by General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, the Nepali Congress (NC) is facing a potential crisis of split.
On Wednesday, the proponents of the special convention held a press conference announcing the gathering. That evening, the two general secretaries issued a joint statement publicly urging party members to participate in the convention.
On Thursday morning, NC leaders Dr Shekhar Koirala and Dr Minendra Rijal met with party President Sher Bahadur Deuba. During the discussion, Dr Koirala requested that Deuba take the initiative to maintain party unity by halting the special convention. He suggested organizing a resolution conference instead to peacefully resolve the internal dispute.

Dr Koirala also reminded Deuba that Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka had been appointed acting president, emphasizing that Deuba should not remain silent in this situation.
Following the meeting, Deuba asked Dr Koirala to allow him to first consult with leaders from the establishment faction and then discuss with other party leaders to form a shared understanding.
Meanwhile, Acting President Khadka has called an emergency meeting of the Central Work Execution Committee (CWEC). The meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 4 PM at the party’s central office in Sanepa.
All office-bearers and members of the CWEC have been urged to attend the meeting.
