BANKE, May 22: A severe heat wave has been affecting western Nepal for the past few days, making daily life increasingly difficult.

The intense heat, combined with hot winds locally known as “loo,” has severely disrupted normal life across the region.

Hot winds have been blowing from early morning across the western Tarai districts including Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa, Dhangadhi, Bardiya, Dang, and Kailali, making it difficult for residents to step outside.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division had earlier issued a warning of a heat wave in the Tarai regions of Sudurpaschim and Lumbini provinces. According to the division, clear weather conditions and a low chance of rainfall have further contributed to rising temperatures across western Nepal.

Forecast data shows that maximum temperatures in areas such as Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, and Dipayal have reached between 39°C and 44°C, while Birendranagar recorded temperatures between 37°C and 39°C.

Due to extreme heat, daytime movement in streets and markets has significantly declined, with major roads in Nepalgunj appearing nearly deserted during peak hours. Residents say they are avoiding outside visits unless absolutely necessary.

“The heat becomes unbearable from around 9–10 a.m. By afternoon, the hot wind makes it almost impossible to walk outside,” said Arjun Sharma, a local resident of Nepalgunj-10.

Health experts report a rise in heat-related illnesses, particularly among children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic diseases.

Doctors at Bheri Hospital in Nepalgunj say cases of dehydration, fever, headache, dizziness, weakness, and heat stroke are increasing due to extreme temperatures. They have advised people to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

Medical experts warn that prolonged exposure to sunlight during the day can severely disrupt body temperature regulation, leading to fainting, low blood pressure, and even life-threatening conditions if precautions are not taken.

Meteorologists attribute the heat wave to hot air masses originating from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan in India, which have spread into western Nepal. Clear skies and the absence of rainfall have further intensified the heat.

Electricity consumption has also surged due to increased use of fans, coolers, air conditioners, and water pumps, putting pressure on the power supply system in Nepalgunj and surrounding areas. Frequent power cuts have been reported in some locations.

Local businesses say the extreme heat has also reduced customer turnout, negatively affecting trade. “There are hardly any customers during the day,” said businessman Santosh Gupta of Nepalgunj.

Agriculture has also been affected, with crops drying up due to lack of rainfall. Farmers report declining productivity in vegetable farming and livestock, with cattle producing less milk and poultry showing signs of heat stress.

Authorities have urged the public to take precautions, including avoiding outdoor activity during peak hours, staying hydrated, wearing light cotton clothing, and limiting sun exposure.

Health officials also advise special care for children and the elderly, including carrying water and avoiding prolonged outdoor play during the daytime.

Meteorologists warn that the heat wave is likely to continue for the next few days, with no immediate rainfall expected in western Tarai regions.
