Some of the world’s biggest weapons manufacturers are bidding for contracts worth at least 50 billion dollars as European countries look to replace their fleets of ageing fighter jets. In recent weeks, Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Switzerland have all announced plans to buy new fighter jets and other equipment.

The importance of combat aircraft within the European air arms has increased in light of Russia’s aggressive stance in Ukraine and elsewhere. Over the next decade, the majority of Europe’s air forces will be reequipped or be beginning the process, according to Aviation Week.
