KATHMANDU, April 10: Public transport fares in the Kathmandu Valley are set to increase by 25.96 percent, with the minimum fare rising to Rs 24.50, according to the Bagmati Province Government.
The decision follows a recommendation from the province’s fare determination committee and will apply to passenger vehicles operating within the Kathmandu Valley.
The current minimum fare of Rs 19.50 will increase by Rs 5, while the maximum fare within the valley will rise from Rs 37.40 to Rs 47.
Reluctance to implement adjusted transport fares
Fares for buses operating outside the valley will also increase by 17.35 percent, officials said.
The government is also preparing to raise freight transport fares by 26.79 percent, while taxi fares will increase by 12.39 percent. Under the new rate, the base taxi fare will rise from Rs 50 to Rs 58.44.
The revised fares will come into effect after approval from the province’s chief secretary and publication in the official gazette.
This is the second fare adjustment by the provincial government since September 2023, when transport fares were last revised.
The move comes amid rising fuel prices, after the Department of Transport Management recently increased fares for inter-provincial public transport and cargo services earlier this week.
