Oli’s dig at Balen: A passenger claiming to fly the plane is risky

KATHMANDU, Feb 5: CPN UML chair KP Sharma Oli has said that a person sitting on a plane as a passenger claiming to fly it is not only irrelevant but also risky.

Addressing an interaction program organized by the Jhapa–Kathmandu Contact Forum of his party, Oli remarked in an apparent reference to Balen Shah. Taking a swipe at several individuals projecting themselves as prime ministerial candidates, Oli said such claims were not possible from people with no experience or understanding of how to run the country.

“What happens if a passenger says, ‘I can fly the plane,’ and sits in the pilot’s seat?” Oli asked. “Would anyone board such a plane? And if someone did by mistake, what would happen to them? That is why this is a time for everyone to think carefully before making decisions.”

Oli also said he would not accept holding elections in two phases under any circumstances. “I heard the prime minister say elections would be held in two phases if it snowed in the mountains. That is unacceptable,” he said. “Even a child born before last winter knows it snows in winter. Did they not know it would be cold when fixing the election date?”

He stressed that elections must be completely free and fair. “Preparations must be impartial, and voting should take place without fear, pressure, or temptation,” Oli said. “Ballot boxes must not be out of the sight of party representatives even for a second. Everyone must remain alert.”

Oli also directed UML workers to campaign with high morale, saying the party would win the elections convincingly. “Various outsiders may appear; identify them,” he said. “Tell people about the development work we have done, our governance efforts, and public awareness initiatives. Work in a way that wins voters’ trust.”

At the program, party secretary and Koshi Province Chief Minister Hikmat Karki, former minister Agni Kharel, and others also urged party workers to focus on their constituencies.

Politics explained with an aeroplane analogy. Subtle, sharp, and clearly aimed.
