KATHMANDU, May 25: More than half of the road accidents recorded across Nepal in the month of Baisakh (mid-April to mid-May) were caused by overspeeding, according to Nepal Police.
Police data show that out of 2,294 accidents nationwide during the review month, 1,253 were due to overspeeding. Other causes included driver incompetence (137 accidents), pedestrians crossing in haste (133), drunk driving (112), and unnecessary overtaking (46).
When will it end?
A total of 239 people — 158 men, 54 women, and 27 children — lost their lives in accidents during the month. Additionally, 752 people sustained serious injuries, while 3,220 suffered minor injuries.
Police took action against 137,094 traffic rule violators and collected Rs 118.27 million in fines.
Altogether, 3,334 vehicles were involved in accidents, with two-wheelers accounting for the highest number of crashes. Most accidents occurred between 6 pm and midnight (859 cases), followed by noon to 6 pm (850), 6 am to noon (506), and midnight to 6 am (78).
In the past 36 hours, three people died and 94 others were injured in road accidents across the country, police reported. Two deaths occurred in Bagmati Province and one inside the Kathmandu Valley.
